Updates to NHS right to work employment checks standard

Updates have been made based on guidance relating to asylum seekers undertaking voluntary work.

14 December 2023

The NHS right to work checks standard has been updated to reflect Home Office policy which supports asylum seekers with volunteering for charities or public sector organisations while their claim for permission to live and work in the UK is considered.

Updates to the NHS right to work checks standard reflect the distinctions between an asylum seeker’s entitlement to volunteer and undertake paid employment.

Organisations are not required to alter their usual right to work checking processes, however should be aware of the differences if asylum seekers apply to volunteer within the NHS. All relevant safeguarding checks still need to be undertaken.

The updates can be found in section 4.3 of the right to work checks standard
