Values based recruitment (VBR) is an approach to help attract and recruit prospective employees whose personal values and behaviours align with those of your organisation.
VBR can be delivered in a number of ways, for example through:
- pre-screening assessments
- values based interviewing techniques (role play, written responses to scenarios)
- assessment centre approaches
Organisations within and outside of the NHS who have successfully implemented and evaluated VBR report many benefits from doing so, such as: reduced agency spend and recruitment costs, reduced staff turnover, a more positive work environment, reduced sickness absence and increased job satisfaction.
To help employers in the NHS recruit staff with values that fit with their organisation, we have created a range of information and resources, including toolkits and a behavior framework.
Health Education England's national VBR framework has been designed to help employers and higher education institutes assess the values of candidates. It also provides case studies, tools and resources.
Any VBR techniques, assessments or processes used should be equality assessed and assured.
