SAS Week provides the opportunity for employers to celebrate the specialty and specialist doctor workforce (SAS) and raise it's profile as a rewarding career and a much valued part of the NHS workforce.

  • Monday 9 October 

    SAS as a career choice 

    There are resources from our stakeholders that highlight and support the SAS role.

  • Specialist grade 

    In our resources you can find details of how one trust reviewed its medical workforce and created specialist grade posts and Dr Rob Fleming shares his perspective on becoming a specialist.  

  • Today we highlighted SAS in extended roles and SAS development with a case study from East London Foundation Trust and an article from The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges about how SAS doctors are ideal candidates in providing education, teaching and training.   

    • Download the SAS development guide to support the development of specialty and specialist doctors. 

    • Read our guidance that explains how employers should calculate the 2023/24 SAS development fund. 

    • The guidance, autonomy of SAS grade, published by the BMA, clarifies the arrangements on autonomous working for employers. It can also be used as a tool for SAS doctors, when seeking recognition of their ability to work independently. 

    • Our SAS induction checklist, supports employers in providing SAS doctors with a good induction to allow a smooth transition into their new role. 

    • The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) has published information about the importance and benefits of SAS doctors being offer the opportunity to as a mentor or mentee for personal and professional development.  

    • Read this article from AoMRC that highlights the benefits and reasons that SAS doctors make good educators and should have an instrumental role in delivering education teaching and training.

    SAS advocate role and SAS wellbeing 

    Access the case studies below showcasing how trusts are prioritising SAS wellbeing. Make sure you view our SAS advocate infographic that highlights the key role and responsibilities. 

    • Read Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust case study about its SAS celebration day to raise the profile of SAS doctors.   

    • Read this case study from University Hospitals of Derby and Burton about its wellbeing event for its SAS workforce.  

    • Access our SAS advocate guidance which explains the role’s purpose, suggested actions and activities for the role and the competencies required. 

  • Friday 13 October 

    Equalities and the Medical Workforce Race Equality Standard (MWRES) 

    Friday was equality within the SAS workforce.  

    • Read NHS England’s First Five – a commitment to collaborate and focus on the five domains set out in its latest report.  

    • The Royal College of Surgeons in England has a web page dedicated to equality, diversity and inclusion for the SAS workforce.  

    • It’s not too late to take part in #SASWeek23, share your experience of how invaluable SAS doctors are.
