Recruiting young people
Attracting and recruiting young people from the local community can help develop a more diverse future workforce, offering pathways to young candidates who might not have considered careers in the NHS, or for those not wishing to remain in full-time education who are looking for a route into sustainable employment.
In this video, York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust shares how it uses the Sector-based Work Academy Programme (SWAP) to support widening participation, recruit local talent and create sustainable pathways into NHS careers. The trust explains how SWAP works in practice, the benefits of partnering with Jobcentre Plus and training providers, and the positive recruitment and retention outcomes it has achieved.
For further opportunities to support young people into employment, organisations may also wish to explore the government's Jobs Guarantee programme. The Jobs Guarantee aims to provide fully funded, six-month paid jobs for eligible young people aged 18 to 24 who have experienced long-term unemployment.
