DBS Eligibility: NHS example scenarios by job role

29 / 08 / 2018

This document (revised in August 2018) sets out a number of different example scenarios to help employers in the NHS make a more informed decision about whether or not a role is eligible for a criminal record check through the Disclosure and Barring Service (known as a DBS check). The scenarios are based on common queries received from employers.

The resource should be used in conjunction with our DBS eligibility tool and our criminal record checks standard. Please be aware that the responsibilities a staff member may have under each role may vary and as such employers should use their own discretion when organising checks. The examples outlined in this document are intended as a guide only.

The guidance covers several full-time positions and volunteer roles and includes roles such as cleaners, directors, hospital porters, interpreters, paramedics and receptionists.
